It is safe to say that the global pandemic has brought on a whirlwind of emotion. We've got five heathy habits to adopt now and take with you, post lockdown.

1. Establish Your Routine

The stay at home order has a lot of us feeling out of control, losing track of time and even days. It is hard to get a sane thought - we get it. The best way to get back on track is to get back into your routine and if you didn’t already have one, take this lockdown as a life changing opportunity for you! Establishing a routine creates organization and mindful goal setting which allows for more productivity and time to focus on yourself and your wellbeing. If you’re feeling lost, start with the basics. Making the bed is a great task to tackle right away AND it is scientifically proven that it makes you happier and more productive! We also recommend drinking a few glasses of water in the morning since the body is dehydrated when you first wake up. Start replacing your normal routine with things you can do at home. If you got ready to go to the office, try setting up a workspace other than your couch and get ready to go to your new makeshift office. If you woke up early to go to your work out class, then wake up and find an online class! Now that we are dealing with more time than ever, it is important to tune in with yourself and ask what you need. Try to establish healthy habits that you can take with you even after the stay at home order has lifted.

2. Add in a Workout Routine

The number one reason for not working out is not enough time. Now that we have more time than ever and a number of studios are streaming free classes, it is a great time to find what works for you. Lets walk out of quarantine with a new work out routine! If you already have your go-to work out routine and just need some motivation, try something new! You can try to find local studios in your area that are streaming online, so if you like the class it will be easy to visit once businesses begin to reopen. There are also great apps that you can try for free. You may discover that working out from home works best for you. Working out can seem daunting at first, but the benefits are so worth it! To name a few: working out keeps skin young and healthy, reduces cortisol levels, helps maintain weight, improves mental health, and improves cardiovascular health. During this time, we suggest setting one small fitness goal each day that is doable for you. Maybe one day you can try a pilates booty burn, the following day you go for a walk, or try that yoga class that you have always wanted to try. Take this time as an opportunity to find what works best for you and your body. Once you get into the habit of setting time aside to work out, you will be able to carry that habit into your post quarantine life by establishing a work out routine that works best for your lifestyle.

3. Discover Yourself by Practicing Mindfulness

Understanding yourself is a beautiful thing that often gets overridden by our busy schedules. When we just go, go, go, we forget to check in with ourselves and be mindful of what we need and how we are feeling. Now that you have been forced to slow down and spend more time alone, you may find yourself more aware of your thoughts. Embrace it and dive deeper. This is a great start to practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness increases awareness and therefore helps create healthy habits. Start by asking yourself simple questions like, what did I eat today? How did that make me feel? Why am I in a better mood today? Can I take steps to achieve this feeling all of the time? Use this time to make a habit of checking in with yourself and asking yourself questions. If you’re feeling ambitious you can even start a daily journal of your thoughts and gratitudes. This is a helpful way to dive deeper into increasing awareness. Meditation is a great way to practice mindfulness. It is proven to increase awareness and reduce stress. Meditation is easy to get started so if you are feeling stressed, give it a try. It is a great way to challenge yourself, learn yourself, and achieve growth. Remember that our health is comprised of so many attributing factors. If you challenge yourself to grow in one area, the rest will grow too.

4. Learn to Cook

The best skill you can learn for yourself and your nutrition is to learn to cook with whole foods at home. Lucky for us, the stay at home order has forced us to face the kitchen and cook at home. Use this time to try to get creative in the kitchen. Try to get into the habit of cooking recipes with simple whole foods and you will begin to realize that cooking healthy meals doesn’t have to be difficult or break the bank. Supplies are limited at grocery stores and probably in your fridge as well, so have fun with it. Learn what you like and what is doable in the kitchen for you. Take this as an opportunity to experiment with cooking real whole foods and try some new recipes that you enjoy and that you can take with you into your post quarantine life.

5. Upgrade Your Environment

Now that most of us are working from home, it is important to make our living environments enjoyable. When you get your surrounding environment together, you get your life together. Science proves that working in an enjoyable environment increases your mood and your productivity. Although it isn’t an optimal time for shopping, you can take small steps to make your environment more pleasing for you. Start by cleaning up! Setting aside time to keep your living area clean and decluttered is a great habit to adopt in order to keep your living space stress free and organized. If you have the space, we suggest creating an area other than your couch to get your work done. A lot of people have found themselves working long and strange hours during this time, so this will help organize your work-life balance and feel some normalcy again. Try setting up your new office near a window. Being near nature decreases stress levels and increases mood. We always suggest adding plants around your home to feel the benefits of nature! Try using this time to make the changes around the house that you have always wanted to make, but never had time for. Maybe you can add a pop of color to your kitchen or reorganize your closet space. These simple changes will help your wellbeing by turning your home into an organized, productive, creative space that you enjoy being in.
